Hi friends. Welcome back to our special November podcast series, all about money gratitude featuring "The Magic" by Rhonda Bryne. So last week we kick things off by talking about
how being thankful can totally change how you handle money. We learned that emotions are a big deal when it comes to spending and saving, and that being grateful can help you build better money habits, because as I always talk about your thoughts, create your feelings, which generate your actions, which create your results.
And if your thoughts are not generating feelings of gratitude, then you're probably not doing actions and getting the result you want. So it makes sense. Today we're going to learn a few simple practices that come from the book, the magic to help you feel grateful for your money, even in a hard time, which can be very hard and challenging.
Believe me, I get it. I'm going to share with you some personal stories. I'm not an expert at this. This is a practice. It's something you have to do. to keep doing and get better at like going to the gym, you don't go to the gym once and then all of a sudden you have big muscles, you have to keep going.
And if you go and build muscles and then you stop going, you lose your muscles. It's the same way. We have to just consistently practice this stuff.
Okay. But before we start, I just want to make sure you don't write this off as something silly, because as I, Often talk about there's real science behind this your brain works in a certain way and we're going to talk about that way because that is how we reprogram our own thoughts.
That's how we kind of brainwash ourselves in a good way.
This is why it's so important for us to learn the skill of managing our feelings. And it's a skill. It's something you learn. We're not taught this in school. We're not taught this anywhere else. So we need to teach it to ourselves. And once we start to teach ourselves how to manage our emotions, we can see that we can create any result we want in our life.
We need to know that when you're feeling grateful, you can't also be feeling scared or anxious. You can't feel those different feelings at the same time. So if you're choosing to feel grateful, you're not having those other negative feelings, and they aren't bringing you down. You can decide to have grateful feelings, even when things are tough. I know that's hard to think about, but you can do that.
It can make a big difference. And then we're just going to talk about these steps and then you will start to notice good things happening with your money, like finding extra money, having a discount on something, it's just strange how it works, but I'm going to tell you some examples in my life. I will convince you that being grateful can change your money situation. Let's get started and attract some great things into your life. This first practice is called MAGIC MONEY and there are two simple steps to it. But before we jump into it, I want to bring in a quote from Tony Robbins because it really helps. explain how this works and the quote is "where focus goes, energy flows" and this means that whatever you focus on impacts your life. So it's better to focus on, let's say goals instead of fears.
If you're always complaining or worried about money, things won't improve. You will just end up with more negative feelings and more problems. This idea is backed by how your brain works. When you focus on something, your brain's attention system called the RAS, reticular activating system, it kicks in and it acts like a filter only letting important stuff through.
So if you focus on positive things, your RAS will show you opportunities and ideas and help you achieve them. But if you focus on fears, or you're constantly complaining, your RAS will bring more of those things to the front of your mind, making it hard to see good stuff.
I'll give you a good example that people always use. Let's say you're in the market to buy a white Toyota RAV. That's what you want. You're so excited about it. You've been pricing them out. You're going about your day, driving to the grocery store, driving to work, you're going to see white Toyota RAVs everywhere.
And the reason is because of your RAS. There's so much information out in the world that your brain cannot take it all in. It can't make sense of it all. So the RAS is this filtering system that says white Toyota RAVs are important to you right now. And so it will filter all the other things you see and that's what you will see.
It's crazy how it works. I want you to try it and you will see how you can make your brain work for you.
Negative thoughts also make our brain release stress hormones like cortisol and that can just make us feel more stressed, more upset and makes it tough to find solutions or notice anything positive in the situation. In that same way, when you focus on gratitude, your brain is releasing chemicals like dopamine and serotonin.
And these chemicals help improve your mood, make you feel better, and make you see new possibilities. Just want to convince you that choosing to focus on what you want instead of what you're afraid of, your brain will support you in this, and you will have more good outcomes.
This focus shift not only lowers your stress, but helps you spot opportunities, be more resilient and have a more positive and active mindset. this magic money practice teaches you to be thankful for the money you do have.
I know this might be tough if you're going through a hard time, but just you knowing that generating gratitude can start to make things better can really inspire you to learn this skill and change your mindset. Here are two simple steps to help you focus on gratitude and bring more things your way.
Step one is to think about your childhood, a time when you weren't responsible for money and write a list of all the times other people paid for you. Consider things like I had food to eat. I always had dinner on the table. I had a beautiful home to live in. I had transportation to and from school. I had a bike.
I had toys. I had pets. I could be in sports. I had piano lessons. Write a whole list and in your heart be very focused on being thankful for all of those memories. Because as you're thankful for that past experience and you're feeling that gratitude, it's going to come in to your present and your future. Try that and see how it feels. The second thing is to take a dollar bill, write a sticky note that says, Thank you for all the money. I've been given throughout my life and I do that.
I have it here. I've had this here for years and years. Hopefully you can't see the bad handwriting, but this sits on my desk and I just gazed over at it and will say thank you, thank you. Mine says thank you, thank you for all the money I have now. My words are a little bit different, but you get the idea.
You're going to look at this dollar bill during the day and you're just going to feel really thankful for this list of all the things that you received throughout your childhood. And the more you feel this gratitude, the more you'll start to see amazing changes. I'm not kidding. It's magic. This magic happens when you focus on being thankful.
Here's a powerful example of how complaining about a money problem just made worse for something in my life. So last year, after I left my struggling business, I had to sell my house, pay off a loan and move into a rental house. And then I found out that someone was living in one of my rental properties without my permission, without paying, without a lease, and I got so frustrated.
How this happened is that during the pandemic, property management companies found a system to show properties without anyone being there so that COVID wouldn't spread and they just kept that system going. So some scammers took advantage of the situation by sneaking in, moving their stuff in, and then pretending to have a fake lease.
Or I guess they were pretending to have a lease that was fake. The police couldn't remove them because they couldn't tell if the lease was real or not. So I had to go through this very long eviction process that took about four months. And during that time I had no rent and my property was being damaged by all of the people that this person was letting in and out of the house. Let me tell you, I was constantly complaining about the situation to whoever would listen and things kept getting worse and worse. Every day there was news of something else that was going wrong with the situation.
I even had to hire a constable to guard the house at one point and he just sat outside and watched it because I was afraid that they would start taking appliances out and there was a lot of other activity that I was worried about. So I had to pay this constable an hourly fee to sit outside the house and babysit it.
Finally, my son asked, why are you living in a rental house while someone else is living for free in yours? And he suggested, why don't you sell the rental and buy your own house? You get rid of that problem and you also solve a problem for yourself. I had never even thought of this because I was too focused on complaining.
I really hadn't thought of anything except for how frustrated I was. Why me? Why me? Why this? Why are there scammers? Why can't the police do anything? My complaining, whether aloud or just in my head, was constant. This suggestion of maybe you sell the place put me into different actions and I started looking at, what is the value of the property and how much I could get for it. And I realized that the property had more than doubled in value. I started to feel grateful for this investment and for how great it was doing.
As I became more grateful, I'm not kidding you, my situation improved. I found new sources of income and ideas opened up for me. I had never ever considered selling my rentals, yet I was living in a rental. The lesson here for me was if I could somehow just access something to be grateful for in this situation, then it, It builds like compound interest and things get better and they get better because
I'm taking different actions like researching how much the property is worth, which is making me feel more grateful and making me think of different options and taking different actions. Once we got that person out and I could fix up the place again and I sold it and I bought my own place and was back to where I was previous to having to shut my business down. So this stuff really works. But like I've said, It takes constant practice.
You don't just say it once and it happens. Even for someone who practices a lot, I get stuck in my feelings and my complaining and we just have to become aware so that we can more quickly turn things around. It's a consistent practice, just like going to the gym.
It's the same thing.
It has to be a part of your daily life so that when things do happen and your brain hijacks you, you can notice it and do something different sooner. Okay, so are you ready to be a MONEY MAGNET? That's the next idea from the book. The idea here is that we'll switch out our complaints, which are holding us back with gratitude, which will bring more into our life. Remember complaining isn't just about speaking negative words. It includes all those thoughts in our head too. One of the biggest complaints that people have is about paying their bills, especially when money is tight.
When we feel like there's more money going out than coming in, gratitude seems like the last thing we want to feel, but it's actually exactly what we need to feel.
You need to be thankful for everything connected to money. And that means finding gratitude, even when you're paying your bills. So instead of seeing them as burdens, think about all the benefits you receive from them. Here's the simple practice that will make you a magnet for attracting more money.
When you pay your rent or your mortgage, be thankful for having a home. Imagine if there were no banks, if there were no houses to rent, like where would everybody live? And be thankful that you have a place to live. When you pay that bill, you're thankful that you have a place to live. You're thankful that there are banks.
You're thankful that there are landlords. Whatever you're thankful for around that bill, that's what you want to focus on. Let's take your cell phone bill, for example. Take a moment to appreciate how life has changed with a cell phone. This is a phone, it's a music box, it's a computer, it's a way to talk to people all over the world whenever you want.
It's amazing. And as you're thinking about all those things, be thankful for the provider of that bill. When you're paying that bill, be thankful for your cell phone provider. How this could work is that whenever you pay a bill, probably online, however you pay bills, you just say out loud, thank you for the money. The simple act remind you that you are thankful to have money to pay your bills. If you make this a habit with all your bills, you'll constantly feel that gratitude. I had a recent experience where I had to really work to shift to into gratitude from a bill. What happened was about four weeks ago, I received a bill for $2,400 ish tax bill from the state for unpaid tax withholding from 2021 from that business I walked away from. My first reaction was anger. And I kept thinking, what? Why? Why do I keep having bills? And why is this a constant money suck? I was getting frustrated. I tried and tried to get a hold of someone at the payroll provider. All I could do was submit a help ticket. That help ticket sat unanswered for two weeks. Each day I just got frustrated about the penalties and fees piling up from three years ago. So in a moment of desperation, I called another franchise owner in town and asked them if they had had any issues with this payroll provider and any taxes. As she shared how her business was going, felt so thankful to not be in that business anymore. Despite all the money I lost, despite the bill, I realized that I am so relieved to have moved on.
That business was not really aligned with me anyway. I can only see that in hindsight. I just felt so grateful to be out of it and on the other side of it. So from this little tiny piece of gratitude for not being in that business anymore, I started to feel differently, and I felt relieved, and I looked at the problem with this bill differently. Instead of waiting for the ticket and just feeling more upset, I spent about two hours in the payroll system and discovered that the money had actually been deducted from my bank account and the withholding was actually paid.
I could find that there was just simply an error from a different tax account number that was in the system versus the tax account number that was on the notice from the state taxes. So after I contacted the state tax office, they confirmed the mix up and everything was sorted out immediately. There was no longer a bill. And the $2,400 no longer was a problem. And the only way I got to that outcome was by generating a feeling of gratitude that made me dive in and research what could be going on instead of waiting for this ticket response. So friends, I hope you can see how focusing on gratitude instead of complaining can help your brain see things in a different light. Thank you for joining us.
